After his cross-over projects combining Jimi Hendrix’s rock, West African griots and Franz Schubert’s chamber music, tenorsaxophonist and composer Dick de Graaf, one of the original voices in European jazz, initiated Trio Nuevo.
Together with Michael Gustorff on the violin and Hans Sparla on the accordion Dick presents his jazz-meets-tango project including old and famous milongas and tangos by Astor Piazzolla and three original compositions by himself.
Astor Piazzolla, creator of the Tango Nuevo, loved playing with jazz musicians. In the seventies and eighties he made obscure records with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and vibraphonist Gary Burton.
Trio Nuevo succesfully meets the challenge of combining jazz and tango in its own way.
With her impressive alto voice Sandra Coelers sings her own songs as well as lyrics by poets Horacio Ferrer and Jorge Luis Borges that were originally set to music by Piazzolla and have been rearranged for Trio Nuevo by Dick de Graaf and Hans Sparla.
From the (inter)national press:
Trio Nuevo is full of emotions and soul, while retaining its pure integrity.
