The result of these masters interacting is a recording that is easily one of the high points of this year in jazz. It has everything—very cool, laid-back swing, exhilarating, razor-sharp intensity, startling emotional intensity—all combined with a simple sense of the players having a good time.
By its end, the central falling interval of Rotator will have sunken deep into the unconscious—it was everywhere but never repeated.
This is the magic of jazz.

In 2005 the saxophonist released his debut album, Infotation. Now a second album, featuring the legendary Paul Motian on drums, entitled Rotator has been released on hatOLOGY660. The record features Adkins compositional flair alongside, Russ Lossing on piano, John Hebert on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. The musical connection between drummer Paul Motian and the saxophonist along with the entire ensemble was immediate. Paul Motian’s incredible artistry and deep openness made its legendary presence felt on this HatHut release. Since neither bassist or drummer functioned in a conventionally rhythmic sense and with the support of pianist Russ Lossing providing immense chordal harmonies, the band members were given tremendous room in which to improvise and to interact.
